Follow Me to Antigua!

May 31, 2021

So it’s been a minute since I posted over here and I must admit the blog has been long overdue for some TLC. So much has happened in the last few months but if you follow me on Instagram and Youtube you are probably caught up. If not, I’ll give you a moment to go hit the follow button because you don’t want to miss out on all the content that’s coming, lol!

I finally scratched that travel itch after more than a year in lockdown and flew down to Antigua for a much needed break from NYC! I had a few persons ask me why I went to Antigua so here I am making a blog post all about it.

Why Antigua?

If I’m being completely honest, Antigua was not on my radar at all! In fact in the weeks leading up our trip, hubby and I were actually planning our getaway for St. Lucia but it was next to impossible finding direct flights or anything with a reasonable travel time for our dates. So on whim, we started searching random destinations via Expeadia and Antigua made a great first impression. Antigua is only 4 hours by plane from NYC, with extremely low COVID infection cases and rates. Hubby and I are fully vaccinated but we still wanted to be as cautious as possible while vacationing. The island is very small and with low infection rates we felt pretty confident in choosing Antigua for our getaway.

A negative PCR test is required for entry to Antigua within 7 days of your trip. We saw a few persons being turned away at the airport for having either the wrong test or expired test result so I do recommend visiting the Antigua and Barbuda tourism website regularly for any changes to their travel requirements prior to your visit. Once on the island masks, social distancing, temperature checks, sanitization are the order of the day.

Where Did We Stay?

We stayed at the Keyonna Beach Resort. For this vacation we did not have a jam packed itinerary like we usually do. It was all about unwinding and doing as little as possible. We also wanted to be close to the beach (this was a deal breaker, lol). At this resort the beach is literally steps away from your room and it was sooo worth it. The water was calm and crystal clear and it stretched for as far as the eyes could see. The beach never felt crowded as a result. We also liked that the hotel was very small and intimate. The resort is a handful of cottages (COUPLES ONLY) along the beach so we were able to maintain distance from other guests during our stay.

With that being said, there is not much entertainment/nightlife at the hotel. There are no TV’s in your room so at nights you really only have the company of your partner once you are done with dinner (hopefully you guys get along, lol) but yes if you are looking to ‘get lit’ or a party after hours you may not want to stay here.

 What Did We Do?

We rented a car for a day and decided to venture off property to explore the island, We started the day at Stingray City. Located about 10mins off the coast of Antigua, Stingray City is a shallow sand bar where you are able to observe, feed and swim among the stingrays. the area is uncaged so the stingrays can come and go as they please. I was so scared at first but definitely felt more comfortable in the water with them as time went on. Forget all the crazy stories you’ve heard about stingrays; they are actually quite friendly and love attention. We finished the road trip with some local jerk and views of English Harbor atop Shirley Heights. For some of the best views of the island Shirley Heights is a must! Be sure to call or email ahead for reservations as space is limited due to the pandemic.

Overall, I’m very happy that we went with Antigua and we already have plans of going back! Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions about our trip. I will gladly answer them. Until next time!
