My Top 5 Self-Care Habits for a Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” – Anne Lamott
No matter how vein or over indulgent the term self-care might sound, it’s actually very important to your overall well being. Working in the events industry, my days can sometimes be extremely stressful and draining! Be it dealing with demanding clients, long days, occasional working weekends, it’s good to have some habits/rituals to help you reset and get you back to a healthy space. There is no one size fit all type of deal when it come to self-care. For some it’s a long hot shower or even going full beast mode in the gym; or how about some retail therapy at your favorite online store? At the end of the day self-care should promote positive ideas about your self, boost your self esteem, and your confidence too. Life is short, so my number one goal is to make the most of living a fulfilling and happy one. Here are my top 5 self-care habits for a healthy mind, body and spirit.
Going to the Gym -There’s nothing to me like getting my sweat on in the gym! Whenever I’m having a rough day or have a lot on mind this is a go-to self-care habit for me. I currently workout 3-4 days a week, preferably first thing in the morning and I have to say it leaves me feeling energized and in an overall good mood. Sure I’m not the next Jen Selter, well at least not yet, lol! I love that I’m getting stronger with each and every exercise. Every time I beat my personal best on the treadmill or the Smith machine, I can’t help but pat myself on the back.
Cleaning/Purging– Sure cleaning house may seem like a mundane chore for most people but not for me! I love a good cleaning session, the kind where I find things that I forgot I had, or let go of things I no longer need. It feels pretty amazing to declutter. If we are to be symbolic here it’s like I’m purging the negativity from my life and when I’m really in the zone, I even change the whole layout of my space. I can’t tell you how many times my husband has thought he walked into the wrong apartment after one of my cleaning spells!
Using Essential Oils/Aromatherapy– I’m a bit of a home body, so I love my space to be a place of zen and calm. Essential oils and candles are a must for me. When I’m having an off day my favorite White Barn scent is sure to do the trick. There’s nothing like getting comfy under my blanket while the scent fills the air of my bedroom. Eucalyptus oil is amazing in the bathroom! The steam from the shower really intensifies the scent and takes all your tension away. It’s the perfect midweek destresser.
Treating Myself– In the words of Ariana Grande — “I see it, I like it I want it, I got it” If I can afford it and all my bills have been paid then trust and believe I will buy it. Gone are the days when I use to feel guilty about treating myself to that pair of shoes or that beach vacation I’ve been wanting. I work my butt off day in and day out and I’ve learnt to stop beating myself up for treating myself. Like I said life is short so even something as simple as getting some mascara will leave me feeling rejuvenated and in good spirits.
Getting Creative!– If you’re 9 to 5 has you looking at excel sheets and writing generic emails all day, it’s easy to feel burnt out and uninspired. This was me a little over a year ago until I started my Youtube channel. I’m not going to lie I was a bit self conscious about going through with this. A hobby can feel unimportant and a waste of time. I’ve had a few people question my intentions for starting a youtube channel. “Are you making money?” “Is it going to help you get a job” “How does your boss feel about this?” , the list goes on! One year later I can honestly say it was the best decision I’ve ever made! I’m happier, I sleep better, I’m more confident. Youtube has given me the creative outlet I’ve been missing from my job and I enjoy creating content even if I don’t get a million views or a million subscribers. It’s fun making Youtube videos and anything that comes as a result of this hobby is a plus!
